The grape is one of the oldest fruits to ever be cultivated. Spanish explorers introduced varieties of the succulent fruit to America approximately 300 years ago, and we have been enjoying their efforts ever since. Lockman Vineyard has found the perfect combination of climate, soil, and cultivars of grapes for producing the highest quality fruit, Vitis rotundifolia.

Lockman Muscadine Cultivar

Lockman Scuppernong Cultivar

Our grapes are well suited for use in ciders, preserves, jellys, winemaking, or just for delicious snacks. And, Muscadine & Scuppernong grapes contain exceptionally high levels of antioxidants, making them very healthy as well.

Horticulturist James B. Magee of the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has predicted that the Muscadine variety will be a "new health food," due to its high fiber and high resveratrol content (that is the heart-healthy component found in red wine) . In a study reported in Science magazine, 1997, researchers at the University of Illinois showed resveratrol to have anticarcinogenic activity, meaning that it inhibits tumor promotion. Muscadines also contain ellagic acid, a natural organic compound thought to inhibit the start of cancer caused by certain chemicals.

The most popular ways in which the fruit is used is eaten fresh, in preserves or canned in jellies, dried into raisins, and crushed for juice or wine. Muscadine puree actually has more dietary fiber than oat or rice bran, and our preserves and jellys make a great topping for almost anything... on ice cream, muffins, bagels, toast...you name it.
Although machines have taken the place of much handwork, grapes are still harvested by hand in many places, including ours.
